A Celebration of Curls 2: February 22nd, 2014
Shakara Natural Tip’s A Celebration of Curls 2 featured Celebrity Hair Stylist Felicia M. Leatherwood and Natural hair Vlogger and Blogger Nappturally Chic Jeré in our latest show! The event sold over 250 tickets!
The event started around 3.45 P.M. and did not end until well after 9.00 P.M. Our venue and location: Emmanuel Howard Park United was amazing. After selling 200 tickets we had to upgrade our space 1 week to the event to accommodate more attendees.
Yemi S. Wellhauser, Editor-in-chief, of Shakara Natural Tips began the workshop by introducing sponsors, highlighting Essence magazine’s photo shoot as well as door prizes up for grabs! Our door prizes were sponsored by Curly Hair Solutions, En’tyce Your Beauty Naturally, LishuaNaturals, Bobeam, The Science of Black Hair, Diva Designs Hair Studio and Jessicurl.
I remember Jeré saying:
This stayed in my mind, because for a long time it was a problem for me. I have combination hair [so it is neither thick nor thin] and neither chemicals or heat work for me. Applying them, literally, kills my hair and then I’m faced with starting my journey all over again. I’ve learned in the last couple of years to stay away from heat and chemicals and watch my hair thrive.
She also highlighted the need to follow Vloggers on YouTube with your own texture! Personally, after following Vloggers like Mahogany Knots, Mae, HeyFranHey, to name a few. I decided to stop watching videos for the wrong reasons – which is wondering why my hair does not look like theirs! Focusing on a bloggers hair can be not only distracting but also discouraging…who needs that right!
Now, I only referred to YouTube when I need to try out a new style or styling technique.
Jeré then demonstrated and explained in detail what the LOC method is: Liquid, oil, and cream. In a nutshell, this method helps to lock in moisture for days without having to moisturize daily. Products and oils from Alikay naturals were used during the LIVE demo.
On the other hand, Felicia also highlighted the need to use healthy hair care oils in your regimen. Some of these oils include jojoba, castor oil and coconut oil. She also emphasized the need to drink water, as opposed to sodas, for optimum health and well-being. I liked that her seminar focused on hair, nutrition and choosing a healthy lifestyle.

- I don’t wash my hair often! Well neither do I. I wash my hair once a week or bi-weekly.
- I don’t get carried away by a Vlogger or blogger’s hair anymore. I’ve figured, like me, they only post the very best pictures. I’ve also learned to accept my own hair. With proper care and all natural hair care products I’ve seen visible hair growth!
- When choosing a natural hair care stylist, it’s important that you schedule a consultation before your appointment. If they don’t offer consultations, find another stylist. It’s your hair and your money, don’t be afraid to voice your preferences while being polite but firm!
